John Willie Smith, Sr., was born January 28, 1931 to the late Willie D. and Grace Ella Smith. John completed his earthly mission and departed to his heavenly home on January 27, 2015, just one day before his 84th birthday. He was preceded in death by nine siblings, Mattie B. Thigpen, Willie Talley, Lucille Cheers, Annie F. Lillard, Annie B. Smith Verge, Mary F. King, Rosie Richardson, Jimmy Smith and Ella S. Marable.
He professed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with Silver Springs Missionary Baptist Church. He later moved his membership to Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. John was retired from the City of Murfreesboro.
He leaves behind to celebrate his life, wife, Mary Smith. To their union five children were born; Ann (Joe) Cross, Michael Smith, Brenda Smith, Felita (Sherman) Smotherman and John W. Smith, Jr., all of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He was blessed with fourteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, a devoted godson, Fred McHenry, Jr. and a great number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
John W. Smith was known and loved by many and he never met a stranger. When people would ask him how he was doing he would respond with, “I won’t complain, but I will explain.” John had a caring nature about him always willing to help people. Whenever he would meet you, John would always greet you with a smile.
John Willie Smith, Sr. will lie-in-state on Friday, January 30, 2015 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Rucker Memorial Chapel. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. with funeral to follow at 12 p.m. at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. James Ward is the Eulogist. Burial will follow at Cherry Grove Cemetery.
